Organic Waste

By 2050, 3.4 billion tons of organic waste will be generated worldwide on an annual basis (Ziaee et al., 2021).

Project Title

Fate and behaviour of antimicrobial resistance genes during anaerobic digestion and composting of organic waste.

Context/Challenge

These organic waste materials are a major reservoir for the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). They are also a valuable source of organic carbon, nutrients, and energy that must be recaptured in a circular bioeconomy framework. This PhD project will examine the fate and behaviour of antimicrobial resistance genes during anaerobic digestion (AD) and composting of organic waste.
