Xiangrui Ding

“Understanding the microbes driving AMR is key to building safer, smarter wastewater systems.”

Xiangrui Ding is a PhD student advancing research at the intersection of wastewater treatment and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Based at the University of Technology Sydney, his project has been designed in partnership with WaterRA, South East Water and Sydney Olympic Park Authority and focuses on identifying and regulating key microbial communities that contribute to AMR in the membrane bioreactors used for wastewater treatment and recycling.

His work aims to uncover how specific microbes influence the development and persistence of resistance within these systems, with the goal of improving treatment performance while reducing AMR risks. By combining experimental research with detailed data analysis, Xiangrui is contributing to a deeper understanding of how engineered water systems can be optimised for both efficiency and public health outcomes.

Xiangrui was first introduced to SAAFE CRC by his supervisor, Long Duc Nghiem. Through this network, he benefits from a collaborative platform that fosters academic exchange and provides valuable support for his research, linking him with industry experts across sectors working to address AMR.

His day-to-day work includes reviewing the latest scientific literature, conducting laboratory experiments, and analysing data to generate new insights. He values the opportunity to stay at the forefront of emerging research while contributing to practical solutions in water treatment.

Xiangrui’s interest in the field began during his undergraduate studies in 2016 and continued through his master’s research on anaerobic membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment. This strong foundation has shaped his current focus on advancing technologies that can better manage microbial risks.

Outside of his research, he enjoys unwinding with music and gaming. Inspired by the unwavering support of his parents, Xiangrui approaches his work with a simple but powerful philosophy: to make progress every day.
