Gokhan Karadeli is a SAAFE PhD Scholar at The University of Western Australia whose research focuses on the soil microbiome in horticultural farming systems. Under the supervision of SAAFE Foundation Fellow Associate Professor Zakaria Solaiman and Hackett Professor Kadambot H.M. Siddique, he is working with SAAFE partner Troforte Solutions on a project investigating how manure management practices affect soil microbes in horticultural farming systems and their potential influence on antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
With a background in horticulture and plant disease resistance, Gokhan previously researched fungal disease management and resistant crop varieties during his studies at Akdeniz University in Türkiye. His earlier work explored biological control strategies and disease resistance in citrus and grapevine systems, laying the foundation for his current interest in AMR and sustainable agriculture.
At SAAFE CRC, Gokhan is exploring novel manure management practices in horticultural production. His research examines how advanced composting approaches using biochar, microbial inoculants, nanoparticles and antimicrobial peptides influence microbial populations in agricultural environments. Through composting and glasshouse experiments, he aims to generate practical solutions that support food security, environmental sustainability and human health within a One Health framework.
Gokhan is particularly passionate about understanding the interconnected nature of AMR across livestock, soil, crops and people. He believes that even small interventions within agricultural systems can have meaningful impacts in reducing the spread of resistance through the ecosystem.
Outside of research, Gokhan enjoys rock climbing, tennis, running and slacklining. He is also fascinated by quantum physics and is learning Latin! These diverse interests reflect his curiosity about both the history of science and the fundamental workings of the natural world.
Gokhan’s long-term goal is to contribute scientific knowledge and practical strategies that help build safer, more sustainable food production systems while addressing one of the world’s most pressing public health challenges.
