EDAR8 Workshop: Villains or victims? How can we better understand the impact of AMR on wildlife and wildlife on AMR

Facilitators: Dr Bethany Hoye (University of Wollongong), Michelle Power (Macquarie University) and Steven Djordjevic (University of Technology, Sydney)
Aims: To distil the research needed to substantiate or refute claims about wildlife's role in AMR — mapping what we currently believe, and what evidence would resolve our biggest unknowns.
Background: Wildlife carry antimicrobial resistant bacteria at surprisingly high rates — yet remain at the margins of AMR research. Are they amplifying and spreading resistance, suffering pollution from clinical and agricultural systems, or just bystanders? Assumptions abound; evidence is scarce.
Workshop Participants and Activity: Any EDAR8 participant is a valuable addition — even if you've never considered wildlife AMR before. In sector-based groups, participants share what they've considered (or not) about wildlife's role in AMR. Then, in mixed-sector World Café groups, they map what evidence is needed to test the field's biggest unknowns.
Participants will:
- Compare what they've considered about wildlife and AMR with perspectives from other sectors
- Help identify the evidence needed to move the field beyond assumptions
