Aims: The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to the ways antibiotics are used in companion and production animal systems both within Australia and globally.

Background: Antimicrobial use varies considerably between companion animals, horses, and food-producing animals, with differences in drug availability, administration, regulatory restrictions, and food safety requirements. This workshop will explore these differences and discuss strategies to minimise the impacts of antimicrobial use on animal, human, and environmental health within a One Health framework.

Workshop Participants and Activity: All participants are welcome at this workshop, although it may be especially relevant for policymakers, veterinarians, and anyone involved in the animal space. This workshop will be divided into topics which will feature a small presentation with group problem-solving activities to reinforce the concepts being taught.

Participants will:

Discuss antimicrobial stewardship and One Health challenges, including regulatory constraints, residue management, and veterinary decision-making in Australia and internationally
Work through real-world case studies examining veterinary diagnostics, surveillance limitations, and the factors that influence antimicrobial selection across different animal sectors
Participate in hands-on group activities exploring antibiotic mechanisms, environmental persistence, and withholding periods by matching, ranking, and comparing different antimicrobial agents and their applications

Workshop Overview
