EDAR8 Workshop: Persistence, dissemination and mitigation of ARGs in the environment: An evolutionary and ecological perspective

Aims: Explore the cellular/ecological processes that drive AMR dynamics in environmental settings and identify those that can be leveraged in nature-based strategies to control the spread of AMR in the environment.​

Background: Although in vitro studies allow defining what is biologically possible, they do not address the relative importance of such processes under environmentally relevant complexity, therefore missing the mandatory contextual information for a full understanding of AMR fate in the environment and developing in situ mitigation strategies.​

Workshop Participants and Activity: The workshop is addressed to scientists with strong expertise or interest in the environmental/ecological dimension of AMR spread and nature-based solutions, and participants wishing to integrate environmental awareness and ecology in policy-making and public dialogue. The workshop will be organized in two periods, one alternating short talks and debates on three topics covering different levels of ecological processes involved in AMR spread, and a second period where working groups will focus on the relative contribution of different ecological processes in selected environments.​

Participants will:

  • Untangle the cellular/ecological processes driving AMR spread based on environmental evidence.​
  • Define how each cellular/ecological process varies over space and time in different ecosystems.​
  • Rank the driving cellular/ecological processes in order of dominance for different environments/ecosystems.​
  • Prioritise these processes according to their implementability in nature-based solutions for a selected ecosystem.​
