EDAR8 Workshop: Mechanistic and analytical advances for AMR abatement in wastewater systems

Aims: Develop a shared mechanistic and analytical framework for quantifying, modelling and engineering verifiable AMR abatement across wastewater treatment.

Background: Wastewater systems are increasingly recognised as critical control points for AMR dissemination. Biological treatment, separation, adsorption, oxidation and disinfection can reduce resistant bacteria, resistance genes and mobile genetic elements, but their efficacy and metrics remain poorly harmonised.

Workshop Participants and Activity: For environmental and chemical engineers, microbiologists, molecular biologists, analytical chemists, data scientists, utilities, regulators and policy experts. The format combines concise expert talks, thematic breakout groups, cross-group exchange and collaborative synthesis.

Participants will:

  • map AMR fate, selective pressures and intervention leverage points across treatment;
  • define priority indicators, sampling/normalisation approaches and data-interpretation needs;
  • co-develop a consensus roadmap and outputs for a post-workshop white paper on verifiable AMR mitigation.
