Dr Mark Sosnowski
Sub-Program Leader, Horticulture Pathology, South Australian Research and Development Institute
“Everyone can play a role in mitigating antimicrobial resistance—we just need to educate the world on how they can contribute.”
Dr Mark Sosnowski is an internationally recognised plant pathologist who leads the Horticulture Pathology sub-program at the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI). After completing his PhD in plant pathology at the University of Adelaide in 2002, Mark has spent over two decades researching the management of grapevine trunk diseases, including Eutypa and Botryosphaeria dieback, across Australia and New Zealand. His collaborative work spans continents, with active partnerships in Europe, North and South America, and biosecurity research with Cornell University in the U.S. He also leads research into almond trunk disease alongside Agriculture Victoria and UC Davis and holds an Affiliate Associate Professorship at the University of Adelaide, where he supervises postgraduate students on a range of plant pathology topics.
As a SAAFE researcher, Mark leads the project on grapevine fungicide resistance, in partnership with Wine Australia and Curtin University. Building on earlier research, the project is developing advanced diagnostic tools, robust field sampling protocols, and new strategies for monitoring and managing AMR in grapevine pathogens. Mark’s goal is to support resistance management in vineyards across Australia’s diverse wine regions, improve disease control, reduce yield losses, and promote long-term industry resilience and competitiveness.
Mark’s day-to-day varies between leading and mentoring his research team, developing grant proposals and research programs, sharing outcomes through publications and seminars, and—when time allows—donning a lab coat or high-vis vest to stay close to the hands-on science. A strong believer in the One Health approach, Mark values the opportunity SAAFE provides to collaborate across sectors and accelerate progress for the wine industry. Outside of work, he enjoys exploring Australia with his family in their caravan—living by his personal motto: “You only live once, so make the most of it.”
